Emma was dialing up the HOA. Again. It was the third time since she moved into the neighborhood six months ago. “Oh hi Miss Emma, where’s the sign this time?” asked a young voice on the other end of the line.
Emma had previously called to complain about her neighbor's yard sign. It bothered her. She set her mind to finding a way to get it taken down without having to cause a stir. The solution: she would simply report it to the HOA, as it clearly violated the rules, and the sign would just… go away. Except, it didn’t go away. So the HOA heard from Miss Emma- let’s just say- a few more times.
“No, that’s not why I’m calling. I’m trying to reach whoever is supposed to be taking care of my lawn. The leaves haven’t been collected and it hasn’t been mowed in weeks,” Emma said impatiently as she took up her letter opener and sliced it through a card postmarked Naples, Florida.
“Um, I’m unsure what you mean Miss Emma. Would you like me to refer you to one of our preferred landscaping companies…” the voice on the other end of the line trailed off.
“No, you need to let whoever takes care of my yard know that they need to do their job.”
“I’m sorry Miss Emma, but we don’t take care of your yard.”
“Let me speak to someone who knows what they’re talking about,” huffed Miss Emma.
“I’ll be right back, let me get my manager.” said the young voice. There was a click and some muffled elevator music started playing in Emma’s ear.
Tapping her fingers on the kitchen counter, Emma looked down at what appeared to be a holiday card from her neighbors with the bothersome sign.
“Dear Emma,
Sorry we never got the chance to catch up with you before we left!” -Emma paused for a moment and remembered ducking behind the couch one of the times they knocked on her door out of the blue. What kind of inconsiderate people show up unannounced in 2020? Sheesh. She continued reading.-“We wanted to send you some holiday cheer and to let you know that we jet off to Florida during the winter months. You can reach us at (412)-626-4366 if you need anything! We were wonderful friends with the woman who lived in your house before you. Your home has a special place in our hearts and we are looking forward to getting to know you better. See you in the Spring!
Warm Regards,
Susan & Charles
P.S. Charles always used to mow our old neighbors yard at the same time he would do our own. He kept up the habit when you moved in! We use Murphy’s Landscaping to take care of our lawn over our winter holiday. If you want them to come take care of yours while we’re gone, their number is (243)-447-6339.”
Miss Emma hung up the phone.
